The new direction for the game has been decided and is now available!
When Riftborn Tactics was originally being designed, it was as a digital card game. Only after continuing to work on it and realizing how much effort it was going to take, the decision was instead made to turn it into a physical game with a Tabletop Simulator mod to let you play online.
This allowed us to find a company (TheGameCrafter) that did print-on-demand work and let me not only hold the game in my hands, but further playtest it for viability (which quickly showcased a variety of issues with the design). I "collected" 4 of the original preconstructed decks that I had designed, as well as ~300 extra cards to build out my collection.
The result of that testing was the ultimate decision to bring the game back to it's "roots" and complete the digital version, which is what you see now. The whole game has been rebuilt with digital mechanics in mind (no more stacking paper tokens!), with all the expected modern features of an online game like friends and chat, card packs, deck management, and a fully online playspace backed by matchmaking. It's definitely not finished yet and still needs a healthy coating of polish (especially on mobile), but we're getting there!
This is all available completely for free, with the primary way to get new card packs is by spending the Gold you earn from playing the game! Complete your daily and weekly quests to earn Gold (50G per Daily and 200G per Weekly) to build out your collection, or buy new card backs to show off with (coming soon)!
I will likely add a way to purchase Gold with real money soon (I gotta pay for the hosting costs somehow), but it will never be in a predatory way (where you have to either spend more than you need or are left with that little bit extra to entice you to spend more).
Please don't hesitate to use the "Report Bug" button in-game if something isn't behaving like you'd expect. I fully expect some of the cards to not work exactly as they should (I tried my best, but programming 1100+ cards is complicated, to say the least).
Enjoy!
